Nothing is more basic than the need for food and shelter. The emergency assistance we provide is the most cost effective way to prevent homelessness and hunger, both in terms of dollars and human lives. This financial and in-kind help enables families and seniors facing a temporary crisis to stabilize their lives: to remain in their homes, to keep utilities connected, to put food on the table throughout the month, to secure needed medical attention and other critical services. Without this assistance, they face larger problems with more expensive solutions: eviction, finding scarce space in shelters, living in cars or on the streets, unhealthy living conditions, malnutrition, and untreated illnesses. SCS also helps working homeless families regain permanent housing. These families, whether living in cars, homeless shelters, or battered women’s shelters, have income sufficient to meet monthly bills but not enough for deposits. |
