SCS relies on the amazing dedication of hundreds of volunteers to deliver food and other services to Sunnyvale residents in need assistance. Volunteers generally start out as part of our food distribution program and often grow into other volunteer duties over time based on needs and skills.
At this time, SCS does not have any opportunities for court ordered volunteer hours.
Over 60 volunteers help to sort, pack, load and greet clients every Monday and two other weekdays a month. We generally do have open shifts available for new volunteers.
- The ability to lift 35 lbs repeatedly is very helpful, although not required.
- You must be able to be on your feet and moving around for the entire work shift.
- One 15 minute break is provided.
- 7:30 - 11:00am
- 11:00am - 2:00pm
- 2:00 - 5:00pm
We especially need help on the early bird shift and can be flexible about exact time slots, as long as the volunteer can commit on an ongoing basis. The early bird shifts are fast paced and a great workout. Some of our early bird crew can only help for 2 hours and go to work after their volunteer shift at SCS.
We also can accommodate schedules by offering every other week opportunities.
Food Pantry Program
Volunteers are needed Tuesday and Wednesday Mornings from 9 am - 12 noon to organize the pantry, check in and assist our clients in picking out food and household items.
SCS partners with another nonprofit called Village Harvest to pick fruit trees in the backyards of Sunnyvale residents. The fruit is donated to SCS and distributed as part of our food distribution program. Our Village Harvest crew generally picks fruit every other Monday morning from 9 -12.
If you like to create handicrafts, knit, crochet, or quilt, come join our Auxiliary which meets on Thursdays at 10am at SCS. The Auxiliary host two events each year, a Spring Tea and a fall Holiday Boutique, with all proceeds benefitting Sunnyvale Community Services.
L to R: Helen Christenson, Edith Bokelman, Sue Barbieri show some of the items available at the Auxiliary’s annual boutique.
Almost every day of the week we can use additional help in our warehouse moving boxes, retrieving groceries from local retailers, cleaning, sorting and more. If you enjoy manual labor and can walk around for 3 hours and can lift at least 35 lbs repeatedly, please contact us. We do ask for an ongoing weekly commitment. Various times are available on a weekly basis.
